Indianer-Reisen in Nordamerika

HISTORY
Founders: Pete S. Catches Sr. (Petaga Yuha Mani) 37th generation Lakota medicine man and his son, Peter V. Catches (Zintkala Oyate) 38th generation Lakota medicine man. Peter’s grandfather, from his mother’s side, played a big part in raising him. A survivor of the Wounded Knee Massacre, he passed away while Peter was in the eigth grade. This wise man who never spoke English or went to school, had a profound effect on his life.
Oceti Wakan (Sacred Fireplace) is a vision shared by two Lakota medicine men in response to events that have devastated their people over the past several generations and is focused on creating a place “for the healing of the family as a whole by rekindling Lakota spiritual values and culture.” In other words, bring them back to honor themselves as Lakota in today’s world without the shame that was given to them as children in the past two generations (Pete and Peter’s) of residential schools. In this hostile environment, the mandate was to “kill” the Indian but save the man. These children were put in Catholic residential schools on their reservation at the age of five. They were only allowed to go home during the summer even though they only lived a few miles away. They were punished for speaking the only language they knew, Lakota, and for valuing anything that was Lakota, such as a boy coming to school with long hair after the summer (e.g., his head would be shaved as a punishment). What this translated to as an adult was “shame” for being Lakota even though their intellect knew there was no shame, as well as the loss of parenting skills, as children learn by what they see – all resulting in a dysfunctional society. Now we have one of the lowest life expectancies: 45 years of age for a man, in the world; major alcoholism and drug addiction; 70% of our students do not graduate; and 83% unemployment.
These two Lakota medicine men have spent their lives bringing the Lakota culture back to their people. A healer and teacher, Petaga Yuha Mani (He Who Walks With Hot Coals) was credited with bringing the traditional Sundance ceremony out into the open among the Lakota, the most sacred of all Lakota ceremonies. All Native American religions were against the law until 1979 in the United States, with the threat of 10 years of imprisonment. So it took much courage for Pete to bring this most sacred ceremony back to his people. In 1964 he was named Sundance Chief by the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council, the only such distinction in tribal history. He died in 1993 leaving his son, Peter, to complete their work and to do what they believe will help heal their people.
They lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota throughout their lives. For decades, Pete and his son Peter healed and instructed both Natives and non-Natives on and off the reservation. Peter has put on and conducted 40 consecutive years of the Spotted Eagle Sundance near his home, the longest running Sundance in Lakota country. Both of their lives have been full of helping their people by doing numerous healing ceremonies, pipe fasts, and other Lakota ceremonies conducted to help the people. Pete, with the help of his son, brought back Sitting Bull’s Buffalo Sundance to the Hunkpapa Lakota at the Standing Rock Reservation and helped secure Sundances on other Lakota reservations throughout the Dakotas and Minnesota. Now it is hard to count all the Sundances on all the reservations.
SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS of Oceti Wakan
Wrote, published, and distributed to help preserve Lakota culture and language:
‘Sacred Fireplace – The Life and Teachings of a Lakota Medicine Man’ - This book describes Pete Sr.’s struggles to embrace being a medicine man; he shares Lakota legends that helped shape his people; and how one is to correctly do these ceremonies given to his people, as the Lakota people were going to books to learn about being Lakota. His reflections on the history and culture of his people were given from a Lakota healer to his people. This book is now used in many schools and universities and is published in Italian.
‘Lakota Language Book/CD’ – A simple book on common everyday conversational phrases and four sacred songs one needs to know to participate in the sweat lodge ceremony and a sample of a Lakota prayer. This has been a favorite at bookstores like Prairie’s Edge and the fastest selling book in Pine Ridge.
‘Learning Prevention Using Lakota Values’ (Primary and Secondary) - These workbooks use a holistic educational approach (a medicine wheel of the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual bodies) tools for the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse for young people. It is based on Lakota culture and values and the latest education of the healing of addiction. This curriculum was developed ten years ago and is still be used in many of the schools on our reservation and other Lakota reservations. Thousands of school age children have used these workbooks in the past ten years.
‘Parent’s Handbook – Raising Resilient Children’ - A supplement for the parents whose children are in our prevention program. We have found that we have been most successful when the parents are involved in this program as well.
‘Lakota Language Workbook/CD – Book One & Book Two’ - These workbooks/CDs were developed for Pine Ridge schools so that students may learn to “speak” Lakota. We know that it is only in speaking the language to each other that will keep the language alive. Most Lakota language school curriculums were developed only for reading and writing Lakota.
Lakota Language Survey for the Health of the Lakota Language of the Pine Ridge Reservation – Between 2006-2007 Oceti Wakan surveyed over 9,000 members of the Oglala Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Reservation to assess the health of the Lakota language. We found that only 2% of our children from the ages of 0 to 17 years could speak the language; over 50% of our Elders over the age of 50 could speak Lakota as their first language; and at least one person in over 40% of all households could speak the Lakota language.
Posters and PSA Announcements on Kili Radio to Lakota Elders to Save the Language - After surveying our reservation, we found that we have a unique situation with so many Elders who still speak the language. Oceti Wakan went on a campaign to encourage Elders to speak only Lakota to the infants and toddlers in their households and not worry about them learning English as they have relatives all around them speaking English. We created and distributed a poster, as well as public service announcements that are being used regularly on our local radio station.
‘Seven Sacred Rites of the Lakota’ CD - This CD was developed for our young people to help them understand the timeless symbolism behind the seven sacred rites given to the Lakota people for their growth and development of a good strength in character and direction for a healthy life.
‘Realities Within’ - A collection of poetry and prose of Zintkala Oyate on his own spiritual journey towards the Great Mystery to help others on their spiritual journey.
‘Lakota Language Learning Stations’ with the help of an ANA grant, Oceti Wakan developed these learning stations to be put in classrooms in many of our elementary schools on the reservation. This “safe environment” allows a child to work and practice simple conversational sentences until they know they can speak them correctly to each other, their parents, and their teacher.
‘Guiding Your Child in Speaking the Lakota Language’ Year One & Year Two – These books/CDs were created to go with the Lakota Learning Stations for the parents to learn at the same rate (two sentences per week) as their children. The program is designed to award students who replace the most English sentences with Lakota in our everyday settings.
